The Basic Ten Sessions

The genius of Ida Rolf consisted in pursuing a very interesting idea.

Instead of trying to fix a local problem (like a back pain, a knee pain etc.), which focuses the attempts of the therapist on the problem itself and the area of intervention usually very close to that area, she suggested a reorganization of the entire myofascial webbing.

Thus in Structural Integration a "local" problem should always be looked upon as symptom of a "global" disorganization in the entire fascial webbing (see also the link What is Fascia?).
The resolution of this "local" problem will come as a result of better balance and greater competence within the entire system.

Thus Structural Integration is at it's best in resolving long-term "chronic" problems.

In the practical application of this idea Dr. Rolf came up with a basic series of ten sessions, everyone of them having a specific goal and a specific territory that you work with. Depending on the individual any one of these sessions can look very different, e.g. in a classic fourth session of the basic ten series the work on the inside of the legs, will focus on different fascial structures if someone has a "O-leg" tendency, than if the person has an "X-leg" tendency - regardless of this individualization the work of a classic fourth hour will be on the inside of the legs.
